Manuscript Assessment
I'll read your manuscript, or a portion of it, with careful attention to assessing its potential and needs as well as how I experience the text as a reader. Then I'll email you a report detailing my findings and my professional recommendations.
I'll tell you whatever I think will benefit you to know about your manuscript, including the following:
-
what I loved
-
what needs work
-
where I got lost
-
how you can improve it with your own revisions
-
how I can help when you're ready for hands-on editing
I'll provide examples from the manuscript to show you the types of issues I found and demonstrate how you might address them. There may be more than one way to fix any given problem, and you may want to either take my suggestions or use them as inspiration for your own solutions.
I will also point out strong, effective aspects of your work to preserve and enhance in future drafts. This isn't just stoking your ego or softening the blow of criticism; it's important to note the strengths of your writing and the appealing elements of your story, then build on them.
I will not edit the manuscript itself at this stage. The manuscript evaluation provides substantial information you can use in your own revisions to improve your next draft. I'll also present you with a personalized editing plan offered as a range of options with price quotes for moving forward with hands-on editing if you'd like me to help you resolve the issues I've identified.
I'll explain the full extent of what I can do to help you polish and enhance your writing, and then I'll offer one or two more limited plans that, while still addressing your manuscript's greatest needs, may appeal if you have a tighter budget or prefer a lighter hand in editing.
This is a great place to start if you are considering hiring me to edit your manuscript, because it gives us a chance to get on the same page about what the full project will entail. It may also be helpful if you're not yet ready for hands-on editing, but you want advice to guide you in revising or rewriting your work. You can always talk to me about editing later.
